The Medicalization of Misbehavior Leonard Sax MD PhD This presentation begins with a broad survey of the rise in the incidence and prevalence of mental health diagnoses in the United States over the past 20 years. We contrast the soaring rate of diagnosis in the United States with the much lower rates of diagnosis for these conditions in the UK and in Europe.
An American child today is more than ten times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD compared to a child in the United Kingdom; an American child today is forty times more likely to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder compared to a child in Western Europe, and fifty times more likely to be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder compared to a child in Western Europe.
We consider various explanations for these differences. Parents must understand this process if they are to prevent their child from being inappropriately medicated.
